From the Sublime to the Ridiculous

I rushed to Freo last night after uni (on what was a public holiday for everyone else) to catch Ozomatli. The gig had been moved - for no apparent reason - from The Fremantle Arts Centre which is a great outdoor venue, to the 'sauna' that is The Fly By Night. So instead of spending a balmy Freo evening under the stars, we literally 'sweated it out' in a crowded shed like mistreated farm animals.

The show itself was entertaining. With a cast of thousands on stage (well ten anyway) Ozomatli delivered their unique blend of Latino hip-hop fusion, heavily laden with percussion and horns. On the whole the music was infectious, with much of the sell-out crowd dancing and mimicking the actions of the band.

It all went a bit silly at the end though. Their trademark finale involves the whole band leaving the stage with their instruments and entering the crowd, continuing to play. But their choice of songs while in the crowd was a tad bizarre… I mean The Sesame Street Theme, The Hokey Pokey, The Birdie Dance… c’mon, that’s just dumb. As if the unbearable heat wasn’t bad enough…

Where's your inner child?!

Nah I agree. That is a little strange.

It may have gone over better if we were outdoors and I didn't have sweat coming out of my ears...

But I thought it did detract from the rest of the show.
